Guide to the Fire Resistance of Mats: Safety Begins at the Door

22. 8. 2025

When choosing an entrance or textile mat for commercial spaces, schools, offices, or residential buildings, it is important to consider not only appearance and functionality but also fire safety.

This is especially crucial if the mat is to be placed in a protected escape route – an area that must allow people to leave the building safely in the event of a fire. According to applicable standards, floor coverings in such areas should have a classification of at least Cfl-s1, with Bfl-s1 being the recommended standard. Mats with this rating feature low flammability and produce very little smoke, which is critical for safe evacuation.

For entrance mats, our company offers several options that meet these requirements. Topwell mats with PVC or textile inserts fall into the Bfl-s1 category and are therefore an ideal choice for escape routes. They combine modern design, high efficiency in capturing dirt, and fire safety.

Také Topwell mats with brush inserts, classified as Cfl-s2, also play an important role – particularly outdoors in front of building entrances. Here, their strength lies in capturing coarse dirt such as gravel, mud, or snow, which would otherwise be carried indoors. Since these mats are placed outside the building and are therefore not part of the fire-protected escape route, strict fire resistance requirements do not apply to them. This allows you to take full advantage of their excellent cleaning properties and weather resistance, even in projects with high demands on interior safety. The brush mat thus serves as the ideal first stage of the cleaning zone – and as a perfect complement to higher-classified mats installed further inside.

Among textile mats, we offer several variants with different classifications: Cleanwell Atrium and Victoria achieve a Bfl-s1rating, making them suitable even for protected escape routes. They excel at absorbing moisture and fine dirt while maintaining an attractive look, making them ideal for representative spaces. Alba and Nomawell mats are classified as Cfl-s1, which still complies with standards for escape routes, though with slightly higher smoke production in case of fire. These mats are well-suited for standard entrances and lobbies, where slightly higher classification is acceptable but functionality and design remain priorities.

Choosing the right mat is not only a matter of aesthetics or cleaning – in both public and private buildings, it is also about safety and regulatory compliance. If you are unsure which mat is most suitable for your facility, do not hesitate to contact us– we will recommend a solution tailored to your needs and fire safety standards.
